1999 Notre Dame-Oklahoma: A look back at Josh Heupel’s Sooners against Dan Mullen and the Irish

Tennessee (2-1, 0-0 SEC) and head coach Josh Heupel travel to No. 12 Florida (2-1, 0-1 SEC) for its annual Southeastern Conference contest of the season.

Heupel will match wits with Florida’s Dan Mullen. Mullen is in his fourth season as the Gators’ head coach.

During his playing days, Heupel was a star quarterback at Oklahoma from 1999-2000.

In 1999, Heupel and the Sooners played at Notre Dame, where Mullen was a graduate assistant for the Fighting Irish and head coach Bob Davie.

The contest was a shootout and Notre Dame prevailed, 34-30, as Fighting Irish quarterback Jarious Jackson had one of the best games during his career.

He led Notre Dame, who scored 20 unanswered points, to a comeback victory.

Heupel completed 22-of-40 passes for 168 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

No. 23 Oklahoma entered the contest averaging 536 yards per game against Baylor, Louisville and Indiana State.

Notre Dame held the Sooners, who had the nation’s top-ranked offense, to just 237 yards, as it erased a 30-14 third-quarter deficit.
