It’s been a mixed bag from McDermott in regard to his thoughts and the team on holding training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford in the future. Holding training camp at a home away from home used to be the norm for teams, but now only about 10 still do so, including the Bills.

But under McDermott’s tenure as bench boss, the number of actual practices the Bills have had out there has dropped off. Last offseason, the team had their fewest ever at Fisher, only eight, including no practices at night there. The only night practice open to the public was held at New Era Field. But the Bills did hold joint-practices with the Panthers last year as well down at Wofford College.

It’s clear this hard number of fewer practices at Fisher is why folks believe McDermott doesn’t like shipping his team off to Rochester, even if the coach said he doesn’t know why people think that. But McDermott tried to reassure the situation, explaining that he does, in fact, like camp in Pittsford.

“There’s been a lot of question early on as to whether Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane were proponents of going away to training camp. I think there was some, for some reason, some mixed messaging early. I don’t know how that happened, but yeah, I’ve always been a proponent of going away,” McDermott said. “I just believe in that for a lot of reasons. One of which, getting away, builds fellowship on comradery.”
