If Zion Williamson had his way, one of his future sessions inside of the weight room would include former President Barack Obama as his workout partner.
The New Orleans Pelicans forward told longtime NBA journalist J.A. Adande in the latest cover story of Men’s Health that Obama would be his dream workout partner. Williamson has previously met Obama and said it was a moment he’ll never forget so it may not come as a surprise he’d want to work out with him.
Obama surprised guests in Chicago over All-Star Weekend in February and met Williamson, and several other players, at an NBA Cares event. Williamson said at the time that Obama had been watching him play prior to that event and liked what he saw.
He said I’ve been playing great and I just kind of zoned out after that. I was like, ‘That’s all I need to hear.’ … My whole mindset over here was like, ‘It’s President Obama. He’s standing right beside me.’ This will be a memory that I’ll definitely cherish forever.
The 44th president of the United States was among those in attendance to watch Williamson and Duke face off against North Carolina in Durham in February 2019. Of course, Williamson did not play long in that contest after suffering a knee injury when his Nike shoe exploded.
Given that Obama has often kept up with the game of basketball, Williamson may eventually get another chance to talk with him and, perhaps, even hit the gym together.
