Heading into their February 2 matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, the San Antonio Spurs were looking to snap a two-game skid. They had lost games to the Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic, both of which they had a chance to win. Unfortunately, Friday night was more of the same.
The Spurs led for a long portion of the game, but the Pelicans surged forward in the fourth quarter. The game ended up coming down to the wire, but in the end, a Zion Williamson layup in the final seconds sealed the deal for New Orleans, earning them a 114-113 victory over San Antonio.
After the game, Williamson had some high praise for Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, predicting that he could end up winning multiple DPOYs and MVPs.
“Victor is a very special player,” Williamson said via ESPN. “We were just talking about it in the locker room. He’s a dude that can get two or three Defensive Player of the Year [awards]. I don’t want to put no limit on it, but he can get Defensive Player of Years and MVPs. We haven’t seen nothing like that. We’ve seen things close, but not like that.”
In addition to his game-winning layup, Williamson had a great game against the Spurs. He finished the night with 33 points, eight rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block while shooting 12-of-21 from the field.
As for Wembanyama, he also played fairly well. He ended the game with 16 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, four steals, and three blocks while shooting 7-of-14 from the floor and 0-of-3 from distance.
