NEW YORK — Zack Godley made his first start on the mound for the Boston Red Sox and things could not have gone much worse for the former University of Tennessee pitcher.
Godley, who signed with Boston late in spring training after being released by the Detroit Tigers, was shelled by the host Yankees in a short outing.
New York, which won the game 5-2, touched Godley for five runs and six hits in just 3.1 innings Saturday. One of those hits was a grand slam home run by Gio Urshela.
Godley, who previously played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays, walked two and struck out one in his outing at Yankee Stadium.
His first appearance for the Red Sox (3-6) was against the New York Mets on July 27.
He pitched four innings of scoreless relief and struck out seven in Boston’s 7-4 loss against the Mets at Fenway Park.
