If there are any negatives to the undefeated start for the Oklahoma Sooners it is they are not a great three-point shooting team. They aren’t a bad shooting team, but they aren’t a great one, either.
They shoot 35.3% from three, which ranks 100th in the country. But they have been really good at attacking the basket all year. They rank No. 14 in the country in overall field goal percentage, aided by shooting 60.4% from two.
But they took on an Arkansas Razorbacks team on Saturday that ranks third in blocks per game. Even though the Razorbacks blocked six shots, the Sooners kept attacking and scored 36 points in the paint.
Porter Moser talked about why it was so important to keep attacking the rim. “We know how good of a shot-blocking team they are so we didn’t want to be passive,” Moser said. “We still wanted to attack downhill. Yeah, they blocked some of our shots but I did think we got to the rim as well. I think that’s the key. You want to be completely taken out of their game. You wanted them to play smart, get downhill and if they collapse kick it out, one more, one more. I don’t know if we did that great all of the time. I know they blocked some shots but you can’t be afraid to attack the rim.”
The Sooners weren’t afraid as they continuously were able to get to the rim and make it tough on the Razorbacks and the officials. It paid dividends as the Sooners shot 28 free throws in the game.
