Yankees fans did all the right things in booing the Astros

And now it’s time to move on.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

I’m a Boston guy. I was raised in the area, went to college in the city and root for all the teams that call that great city home.

So the following is going to be hard for me to say but it’s just how I feel – I have to salute the Yankees fans who did all the right things in booing and yelling at the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

Never thought I’d say that!

If you missed it, the Astros made the trip to Yankee Stadium and played in front of just under 11,000 fans who couldn’t wait to give Houston the business for their cheating scandal that broke out before the start of last season.

The Astros used a trash can to help them win the World Series in 2017 and they beat the Yankees in seven games in the ALCS that year. They later beat the Yankees again in the ALCS in 2019 with a Jose Altuve walk-off home run at home in Game 6.

Last year, of course, fans weren’t allowed at games during the regular season due to COVID-19 so the Astros didn’t have to face the boos that would have surely rained down at every stop they made on the road.

Yankees fans made up for that Tuesday night, and they started it well before the game by finding so many creative ways to roast the Astros.

Then when the game started they had a perfect reaction to Alex Bregman’s first-inning home run.

And they also used some foul language toward Altuve. Was that a little much? Maybe, but whatever – if you cheat the way the Astros did you have to be willing to take this heat and they’re just words, after all.

Is all of this a little petty, especially since only five players from the 2017 team remain on the Astros roster? No, absolutely not. Again, this reaction from the fans, especially Yankees fans, is totally warranted. If you cheat and get caught you deserve to get yelled at and made fun of.

Should it be time to move on now that the New York fans were able to voice their displeasure with the team that cheated their way to a World Series title? Yes, absolutely. It’s time to put the past in the past and move forward. The Astros know what they did and they got to hear Yankees fans share their feelings. This doesn’t need to become an every game type of thing, though I do think there will be much of the same tonight in the Bronx.

The best way now to handle the situation is do what the Yankees did last night – they beat the Astros 7-3.
