It’s one thing to announce new revenue or attendance records for premium live events or televised shows in big markets, which is what WWE has been doing on a regular basis in 2023. But perhaps an even more significant sign of how hot the company has been is success when the cameras aren’t even on hand.
That was the case over the weekend, when WWE held two of its SueprShow cards (a.k.a. house shows) at the Arena Ciudad de México in Mexico City on Saturday, July 22, and the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey on Sunday, July 23. WWE announced today that the shows were the highest grossing and best attended shows for the promotion in more than a decade, and that the Arena Ciudad de México show set new marks for attendance, revenue and merchandise sales in Mexico City.
WWE has been extremely savvy about running shows in markets that have proven to be starving to see its product throughout 2023. Its schedule for this year has included three consecutive premium live events held outside continental North America — Backlash in Puerto Rico, Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia and Money in the Bank in London — that all set new attendance or revenue records for their locations.
The SuperShow numbers from Mexico suggest that it doesn’t even need to be a huge card for a WWE show to capture the imagination of fans at the moment. With the Bloodline saga as the centerpiece of its storytelling, the company can seemingly do no wrong when it comes to getting fans to turn out live.
Could a premium live event be in Mexico’s future? It’s something to ponder, though right now WWE clearly has no lack of options when it comes to sites for events for the rest of 2023 and beyond, and that’s got to be a fun reality for the people in charge.
