WR Chris Godwin says he’ll likely stick with current number after Brady departure

Godwin addressed rumors that he could return to No. 12 after the departure of QB Tom Brady.

It’s a new era in Tampa Bay after the departure of quarterback Tom Brady, but not everything is changing in the wake of his retirement.

Namely, it appears that WR Chris Godwin won’t be making any big changes after his QB from 2020-22 left the team. There were rumors about Godwin potentially returning to the No. 12 now that it was once again available, but a new interview with Athlon Sports seems to indicate he’ll stick with his current No. 14.

Here’s what he said about the number switch:

“I wish that I could go back, man. But I think I’m stuck with 14. I think that’s gonna be me from now on. 12 has meant a lot to me, but I feel like it would be kinda weird going back right now. We’ll see. I won’t completely close the door, but odds are it’s probably 14.”

Godwin wore the No. 12 at Penn State and then in the first three years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That changed when Brady came to town, though, and Godwin relinquished the number to the future Hall of Famer out of respect. While the No. 12 is still important to Godwin (it’s still in all of his social media handles), it appears as if he’s going with the number that he won a Super Bowl ring in.
