Women’s basketball icon Larry Slater passes away

Larry Slater served as Wallace State’s women’s basketball head coach from 1989-2011.

Larry Slater served as Wallace State’s women’s basketball head coach from 1989-2011.

He compiled a 479-163 record at Wallace State, winning six state championships (AL) and made four national tournament appearances.

Slater came to Wallace State from Pell City High School. He led the Panthers to the 1988 5A Alabama women’s basketball state championship and compiled a 55-3 record over two seasons.

During his tenure as Wallace State’s head coach, Slater would play various teams from Tennessee.

He would also take his Wallace State teams to watch Tennessee-Alabama games when UT head coach Pat Summitt played the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa.

Slater was an advocate for women’s athletics.
