Many of the parents of Michigan football’s student-athletes have been outspoken about the #WeWantToPlay movement and the subsequent cancellation/postponement of the 2020 Big Ten season. Though families of Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa were the first to put pen to paper as a collective, it was only a matter of time before the Wolverines contingent did the same.
The Michigan parents aren’t just looking to get the 2020 season reinstated — though that is part of it. It seems that they’re asking for accountability as well as transparency via the open letter that they wrote to Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren and University of Michigan president Dr. Mark Schlissel.
Among the things the group is asking for:
- A video meeting with the Big Ten Commissioner to discuss the Big Ten’s rationale
- A video meeting with President Schlissel to discuss the rationale of voting against playing when our safety protocol was proving to be effective
- A detailed description of the critical facts that were used to cancel the season
- A detailed description of standard protocols and safety practice for all Big Ten teams
- A reversal of the cancellation of the 2020 ten game season
Right now, none of these things have been up to code via the conference or the university president. While it is correct that they do not have to oblige, if you’re trying to mold young men into leaders, as the conference and U-M claims to, then perhaps giving them and their families a seat at at the table — or at least discussing the situation in full transparency, would be a good starting point.
