After earning a Pro Bowl nod as an alternate last year, wide receiver Courtland Sutton will be joined by first- and second-round draft picks Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler this season. That’s great news for quarterback Drew Lock but some fans and pundits have asked if there will be enough passes to go around for all of the team’s playmakers.
Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur doesn’t think that will be a problem.
“I think it’s important to have good players at all positions,” Shurmur said during a Zoom conference call with reporters on June 11. “When you add explosive players to the roster, it not only helps them as players to have an impact, but it also helps the rest of the guys. I really do think you have to spread the ball around.
“Typically, in games that you win and play good offense, when you look at the stat sheet at the end of the game, there’s probably six or seven guys that caught passes and there’s probably two or three guys that ran the ball. I really do think if you’re going to play good offense, you need threats outside, inside and in the backfield. It’s going to be fun.”
Sutton, Jeudy and Hamler will be joined by tight end Noah Fant and running backs Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay as the team’s top skill players this season. Playing with those dynamic weapons, Lock should have no problem improving on his 1,020-yard, seven-touchdown rookie season this year.
