With Deshazor Everett injured, expect Kendall Fuller to spend more time at safety

The timetable for Everett to return is up in the air, so Fuller will move back to the safety position more in the meantime.

Mixed into all the disappointment and frustration that took place on Sunday afternoon during Washington’s 30-27 loss to the Detroit Lions was an injury that has the potential to shake up the defense in D.C. for some time going forward. Safety Deshazor Everett went down with a high-ankle sprain, and there isn’t a clear timetable for recovery.

When it comes to ankle sprains, high is always worse than low, with many players who experience a high-ankle sprain missing anywhere from 4-6 weeks, while a low-ankle sprain recovery timetable is much quicker.

So what will Washington do while Everett is sidelined? They have already been forced to go to rookie Kamren Curl in place of Landon Collins, which might have been a blessing in disguise, but now more questions remain.

On Sunday, Washington turned to S Troy Apke to fill in for Everett, which left a lot of fans with heads in their hands. Apke, who was benched earlier this season because of poor play, got beat deep on one of the last plays of the game, but luckily the receiver dropped the pass that would have ended the game. Every fan of the team has to be hoping that Apke doesn’t get a bulk of snaps at the position going forward, and luckily it seems that Washington will instead shift CB Kendall Fuller back a bit more instead.

Fuller played safety during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, so he has some experience back there and can be impactful back deep. He has already moved back there in bits and pieces this year with Washington, so expect that to increase going forward.
