Wisconsin men’s hockey falls to Michigan State at Wrigley Field

Wisconsin men’s hockey fell to the Michigan State Spartans in overtime at ‘The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series,’ an outdoor event at Chicago’s Wrigley Field on Saturday.

Ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Poll, the Spartans opened the contest with a 2-0 edge in the second quarter. Wisconsin, however, battled back.

Wisconsin’s Gavin Morrissey and Quinn Finley each netted goals in the final 10 minutes of the second period to knot the match at two apiece heading into the third and final frame.

MSU would take a one-goal advantage with under eight minutes to play in the third, but UW’s Ryland Mosley tied the game with 48 seconds remaining in regulation, sending it into overtime.

After sparring for nearly the entire overtime period, Michigan State scored just before the final buzzer to claim a 4-3 win and send Badgers fans home heartbroken.

With the loss, Wisconsin drops to 9-12-1 overall and 5-9-0 in Big Ten play. Michigan State now sits at 17-2-1 (8-1-1 Big Ten) with a healthy lead in the national poll over No. 2 Boston College.

Like Wisconsin’s women’s hockey program, Wisconsin enjoyed the spectacle at the center of the iconic venue.

Mike Hasting’s crew will return to action on Jan. 17 with a home matchup against Long Island University.
