Wisconsin at Michigan State: Three things to know

  1. Wisconsin is coming off a 67-53 home victory vs. Nebraska in its Big Ten opener Tuesday. Senior G Brad Davison scored a team-high 15 points with a career-high 7 assists as the Badgers won a fourth in a row but came up just short in covering as 16-point favorites. Wisconsin trailed 33-32 with 14:25 to go before running off 16 consecutive points to take the lead for good. Through the first eight games, senior F Micah Potter leads Wisconsin in points (13.4 per game) and rebounds (7.3 per game).
  2. Michigan State lost its first game of the season in a surprising 79-65 setback at home to Northwestern in its conference opener Sunday. The Spartans, who were 7.5-point favorites, have now failed to cover the number 4 games in a row. Michigan State, which was ranked No. 4 last week, shot just 39% (26-for-67) from the field in the Northwestern upset. Through seven games, junior F Joey Hauser leads MSU with 12.1 PPG and 8.9 RPG.
  3. Wisconsin snapped an 8-game slide in the head-to-head series with Michigan State by pulling out a 64-63 victory at home Feb. 1 – the Badgers were 5-point underdogs and unranked, while the Spartans were No. 14 at the time. MSU won last season’s first contest 67-55 at home, covering the 9.5-point line.

Wisconsin at Michigan State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan State 65, Wisconsin 61

Money line (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (+105) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Spartans have won their last 12 home games vs. Badgers. Wisconsin last won in East Lansing in 2004. Maybe, this line is a trap, but I’ll take my chances with that 12-0 trend.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS since I’m backing the Spartans ML. However, if you prefer to take the points, feel free to skip the ML play and bet Michigan State +1.5 (-110).

ATS records: Wisconsin 3-4-1 | Michigan State 2-5

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 140.5 (-110) is the way to go. Wisconsin has one of the stingiest defenses in the country, allowing 57.5 PPG to rank 15th. The Badgers rank 14th in opponents’ field-goal percentage at 36.2%. Don’t be surprised if the combined score is Under 50 at halftime.

O/U records: Wisconsin 5-3 | Michigan State 4-3
