Steve Nash has more than a few things to learn when it comes to coaching, but one of his old coaches sees something in him.

Although Don Nelson never won a title as an NBA head coach, he won a game or two — or 1,335, most ever by an NBA head coach — throughout his 31-year coaching career. Not to mention, he won five titles as a player.

Safe to say, Nelson understands what it takes to win in the NBA.

So if he gives someone his stamp of approval, that individual is probably in good shape.

Turns out, Nelson thinks Steve Nash has the makeup to be a head coach at the NBA level. Although he doesn’t know a ton about Brooklyn’s roster, Nelson knows the Nets are good, “and that usually makes you a good coach,” the legend told Eddie Sefko of Mavs.com.

Nelson got a good look at Nash in Dallas. Brooklyn’s new head coach became the Mavericks’ point guard after Nelson’s first season with the franchise and left for Phoenix the year before his head coach’s run ended in Texas.

One thing that stood out to Nelson about Nash is, “he’s always had the brain of a coach,” adding:

The head coach was always full of confidence whenever he was on the floor running the team.

He’s always been a coach on the floor. He knows the game. And he’ll learn the rest as he goes along.
