Windhorst: ‘Celtics are not necessarily in’ on a Bradley Beal trade

“Their intention is to get Jaylen Brown on a contract extension this year,” shared the ESPN reporter.

If the Boston Celtics have any interest in dealing for Washington Wizards star Bradley Beal after news broke that the onetime Florida standout is likely to be moved this offseason, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst hasn’t heard about it.

On a recent episode of “NBA Today,”  Windhorst related that his “feel from talking to sources is that the Celtics are not necessarily in on this one.”

“Their intention is to get Jaylen Brown on a contract extension this year,” he continued. “Even if they got Jaylen Brown done, the idea of bringing in Bradley Beal would be extraordinarily difficult because of the three contracts together.”

With Beal already on a supermax contract and both Brown and Celtics co-star Jayson Tatum eligible for and likely to sign their own, balancing three such deals under the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement will be difficult, to say the least.

The Celtics could of course swap Brown for Beal to address such cap concerns, but with four remaining years and another three seasons of heavy usage on Beal’s injury-prone lower extremities, such a move would be a lateral one in the very best of outcomes.

“I don’t think any conversation that involves trading Jaylen Brown is something the Celtics are super interested in right now,” observed Windhorst, signaling Boston has come to a similar conclusion.
