Will there be extra time in the 2024 Copa America knockout rounds?

Whether there will be extra time at a Copa América match depends on what round that game takes place in

Fans hoping for extra-time tension at the 2024 Copa América will have to put all of their eggs in one basket.

CONMEBOL’s massive summer tournament, which is taking place in the United States for the second time ever, will not feature extra time in the quarterfinal or semifinal rounds.

Instead, any last-eight or final-four clashes that finish level after a regulation 90 minutes will proceed directly to a penalty-kick tiebreaker. Similarly, the third-place match will go directly to penalties rather than involving an extra 30 minutes of play.

This is not the first time CONMEBOL has opted for this format. With Copa América taking place in some cities experiencing a particularly hot summer, the choice appears to be a nod to the realities of an important tournament taking part in the grueling summer heat.

Copa América final will have extra time

In the 2021 Copa América, two quarterfinals and a semifinal went directly to spot kicks after finishing with tied scores. Colombia played in two such matches, eliminating Uruguay in the quarterfinal round before falling to eventual champions Argentina.

July 14’s final in Miami, however, will include a standard extra-time session if 90 minutes are not enough. In that case, the two teams would play two 15-minute halves, with penalties to follow if scores are still level.

Article 27 of the 2024 Copa América regulations breaks down the specifics:

Specifically for the final match, in the event of a tie at the end of regular time, extra time will be played with two periods of 15 (fifteen) minutes each. If the scores are still tied at the end of the extra time, a series of kicks from the penalty mark shall be taken to determine the winner, in accordance with the regulations stipulated by IFAB/FIFA.
