At least 10 people were killed and more than 30 were injured early Wednesday morning when an armed man drove a speeding truck through crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
The suspect was reportedly shot and killed by police in a firefight after the incident.
The horrific tragedy came amidst a jubilant New Year’s celebration in New Orleans and also raised questions as to whether or not Wednesday night’s Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia will go on as scheduled. Originally, via New Orleans’ police commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick, the Sugar Bowl was set to be played as planned, with the Superdome reportedly going on lockdown for security sweeps ahead of the game.
Later in the day, however, multiple reports from WDSU — New Orleans’ local news station — stated that the Sugar Bowl would be postponed. Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley later confirmed the news in a press conference that the game will be moved 24 hours later to January 2.
Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley officially announces that the game will be postponed 24 hours.
