Will the Bears find their franchise quarterback in 2020?

Mitchell Trubisky looks to soon join a long list of QB failures in Chicago. But can the Bears find their franchise QB in Cam Newton?

History has not been kind to the Chicago Bears when it comes to franchise quarterbacks. Aside from Sid Luckman in the 1940s or Jay Cutler in the 2010s, the Bears have run through quarterbacks like they’re disposable.

And, to be fair, most of the quarterbacks over the last couple decades have proven to be disposable.

Unfortunately, at this point, Mitchell Trubisky looks to soon join a long list of quarterback failures in Chicago.

Still, Bleacher Report believes that the Bears will find their franchise quarterback in 2020. And they believe Cam Newton is just the guy for the job.

For the first time ever, the market could be flooded with starting-caliber quarterbacks. Maybe the organization doesn’t actively pursue any of the big-name free agents. At the same time, the Bears should quietly inquire about other potential possibilities like Cam Newton.

The Bears need to consider the Panthers quarterback for the opposite reasons Carolina might want to trade him. They’re in win-now mode, and the quarterback position is clearly holding them back. Newton could provide a spark to make another playoff push.

One of the downsides to this potential trade is what it would cost to trade for Newton. Bleacher Report believes the Bears could get Newton for a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 first-round pick.

Considering the Bears haven’t had a first-round selection since 2018 — and general manager Ryan Pace’s penchant for trading up in the NFL Draft — they can’t necessarily afford to keep dealing away draft picks.
