Will Simpson named to MLB Pipeline’s Prospect Team of the Week

Washington alum Will Simpson was named to MLB Pipeline’s Prospect Team of the Week following a torrid week with Double-A Midland.

Former Washington Huskies star Will Simpson has been one of the biggest risers in the Oakland Athletics farm system during the 2024 season. He is now ranked as the No. 29 prospect in the A’s system and was recently promoted to the team’s AA affiliate, the Midland RockHounds.

After posting a .270 batting average with an .853 OPS at High-A Lansing, Simpson has done nothing but hit since arriving in Midland. In six games last week, the former Husky infielder posted a jaw-dropping .524 batting average with an astounding 1.327 OPS.

He has also hit 1 home run and totaled 7 runs batted in since his promotion and helped the RockHounds secure a spot in the Texas League playoffs. While the A’s seem to be counting on their No. 2 prospect, Nick Kurtz, as their first baseman of the future, Simpson could end up becoming a viable option at the big league level.

Simpson mainly manned third base during his time on Montlake and has spent time at both corners of the diamond this season, and if he can continue swinging the bat through the MILB playoffs, he could earn an invite to spring training next year and may find himself in the running for another promotion soon.
