COLUMBIA — South Carolina has parted ways with head coach Will Muschamp.

Muschamp was 28-30 (17-22 SEC) in five seasons with the Gamecocks.

South Carolina relieving Muschamp of his head coaching duties places him as a candidate to join Jeremy Pruitt’s staff in 2021.

Tennessee’s staff is one that faces three assistant coaches with expiring contracts following the conclusion of the 2020 season: Will Friend (offensive line), Tee Martin (wide receivers) and Brian Niedermeyer (inside linebackers).

Pruitt will also fill a vacant defensive line position left behind when Jimmy Brumbaugh was fired following a Week 4 loss to Kentucky.

The third-year Tennessee head coach and Muschamp respect one another and have a friendship in the coaching profession. Muschamp could serve in a capacity of co-defensive coordinator and coach linebackers, a position he has overseen at LSU, Auburn and Texas.

Muschamp’s nephew, Robert Muschamp, is taking part in his second season at Tennessee as a graduate assistant working with the defensive line.

“He does a really nice job for us. Very hard worker, very knowledgeable. Really good young coach that one day will have a chance to probably be a coordinator or head coach. Works extremely hard and we’re very excited that we have him.” Jeremy Pruitt on Robert Muschamp

Vols Wire previously explained how Muschamp and Pruitt have similar defensive philosophies, as they both play CLIP within a split safety coverage.
