After bouncing around between three teams over the previous two seasons, Baker Mayfield bet on himself last offseason, signing a cheap one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He responded with the best season of his NFL career so far, leading the Bucs to a third straight NFC South title and a fourth consecutive trip to the postseason.
The Bucs rewarded Mayfield with a three-year contract extension this offseason, a deal that includes $50 million in guaranteed money, making a clear investment in the former No. 1 overall pick as their franchise quarterback.
But will Mayfield prove to be a one-year wonder in Tampa Bay?
Kay Adams doesn’t think so:
The Bucs kept all of their most important free agents this offseason, and that continuity should help Mayfield’s chances of repeating last year’s performance, or even improving upon it. Even with a new offensive coordinator, Mayfield has history with Liam Coen’s system from their time together with the Los Angeles Rams, which should aid in that transition.
Don’t be surprised if the Bucs make it four straight division titles this year, and once again host a playoff game in January after hanging another NFC South banner with Mayfield at the helm.
