Will Austin Ekeler play Sunday? Injury update for Commanders RB

Will Austin Ekeler play Sunday? The latest on the Commanders RB.

Will Washington Commanders running back Austin Ekeler play in Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys?

Ekeler suffered a concussion at the end of Washington’s Week 12 loss to Dallas on a kickoff return. It was his second concussion of the season, and he was placed on injured reserve. He missed the past four games, but the Commanders opened his 21-day practice window this week. He’s eligible to return for Sunday’s rematch against the Cowboys.

Austin Ekeler injury update

Ekeler was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report, which is normal for a player still on IR. Teams have until Saturday afternoon to make roster moves for the following game. Head coach Dan Quinn offered the following Ekeler update on Friday.

“Yeah, he had a great week,” Quinn said. “We’ll visit about that tonight, where we’re going. But he really had a fantastic week of preparation. He looked fast, explosive, all the stuff that Austin brings, but we’ll visit with him and Adam tonight and tomorrow.”

Commanders RB depth chart

  • RB1: Brian Robinson Jr.
  • RB2: Jeremy McNichols
  • RB3: Chris Rodriguez Jr.

What move will the Commanders make if Ekeler returns? There is seemingly no way they release Rodriguez again and risk losing him. He’s helped Washington win two games. If Ekeler plays, Washington will likely carry four backs, with Ekeler splitting first-team reps with Robinson.
