Why teams should not overlook the San Antonio Spurs next season

Competent point guard play and real NBA depth — there may be plenty of good reasons for opponents to stay en garde.

Recently, we asked our readers to explore whether other ball clubs in the NBA might overlook the San Antonio Spurs on the court next season. But Bleacher Report league analyst Dan Favale recently made the case as to why other teams should not make that mistake.

In a recent survey of the Association, Favale highlighted some of the reasons why overlooking a respective team might come back to bite an opposing squad. And when it comes to the Spurs next season, the growth of star French forward Victor Wembanyama in his second year in the league is just one part of the equation.

Add in competent point guard play and real NBA depth, and there may be plenty of good reasons for opponents to stay en garde in the coming 2024-25 season.

Noting the Spurs “now have 48 minutes or so of strong point guard play following the addition of Chris Paul,” the B/R expert writes that putting “so much value to the arrival of a 39-year-old verges on bonkers in most cases,” and that this is clearly an exception to that dictum.

“Wemby entered the All-NBA periphery as a rookie,” he adds. “There’s no telling how high he will rise in Year 2. Wrong answers seemingly don’t exist.(…) Forecasting a playoff chase for the Spurs feels a touch premature. Then again, is it really?
