By all accounts, the Seahawks had an incredibly successful 2023 NFL draft, filling a ton of needs and holes on the roster. One question arose, however . . . why didn’t Seattle select a quarterback?
General manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll attempted to explain their reasoning following the draft.
“Well, I mean, like we said last night, when you were not right there, you can’t — I mean, there’s three quarterbacks that went right ahead of us and you can’t just push it because of like a narrative,” Schneider told reporters. “It has to feel right for everybody, the whole team, the locker room, coaches.”
The Seahawks headed into April’s draft with a ton of capital, including two picks in each of the first two rounds. Yet, Carroll was able to provide another explanation for not selecting a new signal caller.
“I think too it’s — we do like our guys,” Carroll said. “We do like where we are and we need to add another one, for sure, and that will likely happen (see undrafted free agents). But we’re fired up about Geno (Smith) coming back for us and we’re fired up about Drew (Lock) being back. I think the opportunity for Drew is a really good one, again, to grow with our program and become part of it.
“We think that’s a real strength of ours, and so we need to prove that, but we think we’re going to be in good shape there.”
