Why it doesn’t matter who the 49ers are sending to Mac Jones’ and Justin Fields’ pro days

The 49ers are sending Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch to Mac Jones’ pro day.

It isn’t officially pro day season until the NFL world starts freaking out about the travel itineraries for coaches and general managers. Well, I’m here to inform you that it’s officially PRO DAY SZN, folks.

After the 49ers traded up to the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft — to take a quarterback presumably — we all wondered which quarterback prospect San Francisco was targeting. Alabama’s Mac Jones and Ohio State’s Justin Fields figure to be two of the top options and the two prospects both just so happen to be running pro days on Tuesday, forcing the 49ers to make a tough decision.

NBC Sports’ Peter King revealed the team’s plans on Sunday night:

”I hear the Niners will split the baby, with Lynch and Shanahan expected to attend the Jones workout, while assistant GM Adam Peters likely will lead a small delegation in Columbus to scout Fields. Not sure I would infer huge meaning to that, but it could be significant. How I view it: Jones could be the leader, but it’s not over.”

The 49ers are sending their top-two decision-makers to Tuscaloosa to watch Jones, while the assistant GM draws the short straw and heads to Columbus. So that settles it, right? RIGHT?!?

Well, not really. And I say that for two reasons…
