With the news of Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year contract extension consuming the media right now, it’s easy to get lost in the what-could-have-beens. The Chicago Bears will most likely be haunted by the decision to not only drafting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky but also mortgaging the farm to move up just one spot to get him.
On the home front, the hot topic has been Allen Robinson’s extension, or lack thereof. The 26-year-old is entering the final year of a three-year deal, and he’s coming off a terrific season in which he hauled in 98 catches for 1,147 yards and seven scores.
But with Trubisky potentially entering his final year — with the Bears having declined his fifth-year option — they could be staring at a rebuild on the offensive side of the ball next year. A strong 2020 campaign can help convince the Bears’ brass that he’s worthy of another contract in Chicago. Kyle Fuller went through this exact scenario, and declining his fifth-year option resulted in a career-year.
Of course, the Bears added Nick Foles this offseason to put the pressure on Trubisky, and Foles can hit the free agent market next year, if he meets certain performance incentives. It’s safe to say that if Foles exceeds those, both he and Trubisky will be gone next year. And, in a roundabout way, a Robinson extension may not make the most sense, given the state of the franchise.
If things play out that way, Robinson will not be the only high-profile player leaving town, as the Bears are likely commit to the rebuild by shedding as much salary as possible in the process.
