The 49ers are working out a quarterback. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday reported former Saints and Eagles quarterback Ian Book would be holding a workout with San Francisco.
Given the team’s library of chaos under center the last couple years, any QB-related news puts antennas up. However, our read on the Book news is that the club is checking out available free agents to keep their list updated.
It likely does not mean they’re preparing to turn the page on either Brock Purdy, Sam Darnold or Brandon Allen.
The 49ers are likely just aiming to cover their bases in the event they wind up needing to add another QB. There aren’t even practice squad snaps available for Book. San Francisco has their backup take the scout team reps, and with Darnold and Allen already on the roster there wouldn’t really be a role for a fourth QB.
Book, a fourth-round pick of the Saints in 2021, started one game as a rookie and went 12-of-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions in a loss.
Don’t expect much additional news to come of the Book workout. Perhaps the team revisits him in the event that one of their QBs goes down. Until then they’re just staying up to date on free agents, not preparing to author another chaotic chapter in their recent QB history.
