On Sunday golf fans and casuals alike tuned in to The Match: Champions for Charity, a golf event that raised $20 million for coronavirus relief efforts.
The winners were Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning, who held off Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady to win one-up on the 18th hole.
Woods and Manning leapt out to an early lead, winning three holes of the first seven. Woods played incredibly well, Manning was hitting beautifully … and Tom Brady went and had a total meltdown.
Then Brady holed out from the fairway out of nowhere to birdie the eighth hole, and the team was rejuvenated. (Brady also split his pants on the hole.) On the back nine, with the match adopting a modified alternate shot format, Mickelson and Brady found their stride. The two adopted a strategy of Brady hitting an iron or 3-wood off the tee, and with him finding fairways, Mickelson was able to get aggressive with their second shots.
Manning’s putter went cold right then, and the comeback was on. Phil and Brady fought back, and had chances to tie up the match, but a couple missed putts — and an incredible performance from the GOAT, Tiger Woods, kept them at bay.
The results were only a small part of the story, however. There was great trash talk between Brady and Manning, great trash talk between Tiger and Phil, a breakout star performance from on-course announcer Justin Thomas, and some great (maybe) trash talk from Tiger Woods post-match.
All in all, a successful event.
