When current Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was a member of the Boston Celtics, it was very clear what the talent hierarchy of the team was, with the Duke product at the point at the apex of the star continuum on the team. But since he left to join superstar teammate Kevin Durant on the Nets, another Duke alumnus has quite likely eclipsed Irving’s star.
That would be Boston All-Star forward Jayson Tatum, who has been flirting with First Team All-NBA and has been a fringe Most Valuable Player (MVP) candidate for most of the second half of the 2021-22 NBA season.
Has the student overtaken the master? We may well see the proof either way when Boston hosts Brooklyn for Game 1 of the first round of the East playoffs this Sunday afternoon.
Until then, the folks at NBC Sports Boston put together a video of Chris Forsberg, Adam Jones, and Trenni Kusnierek debating exactly this question — check out the clip embedded above to hear their takes.
