There have been a lot of questions surrounding the Chicago Bears’ roster this offseason — particularly on the offensive side of the ball. But there’s no denying that they’ve got some young talent in place.
Pro Football Focus examined the top three players for every NFL team, where they named linebacker Roquan Smith, cornerback Jaylon Johnson and wide receiver Darnell Mooney as Chicago’s best talent.
Other players who were considered — but notably missing — include hopeful franchise quarterback Justin Fields and edge rusher Robert Quinn, who’s coming off a single-season franchise record for sacks.
The Bears were one of the more challenging teams in the NFL to do this exercise for, and it wasn’t because there was an abundance of options to choose from. Chicago will be hoping that the three players above — along with Justin Fields — are at the core of its rebuild.
Fields showed enough high-end ability to be excited about his future in Chicago, delivering top-five finishes in big-time throw rate and positively-graded play rate. However, there were too many negatives as a rookie to include him above after just one season. Fields will be tasked with cutting down on the negatives with one of the worst supporting casts in the NFL in 2022.
PFF explained the reasoning behind leaving Fields off the list, which include his struggles during his rookie season, as well as an unproven supporting cast entering the 2022 season.
But when looking at this roster, it’s guys like Fields, Smith, Johnson and Mooney who the franchise hopes elevates this team to success in the future.
