Former Florida quarterback [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag] is now an Indianapolis Colt and he’s ditching the No. 15 he wore in Gainesville for a single-digit jersey in the pros.
The NFLPA released a video announcing Richardson’s new jersey number (below), and he’s effectively dropping the one before the five to wear No. 5 in his rookie season. Richardson says that this is the number he wore as a youth, but he switched to No. 2 while at Eastside High in Gainesville and then took over Tim Tebow’s old number at UF.

Of course, Richardson ended up distancing himself from the No. 15 and “AR-15” nickname over the summer, citing multiple mass shootings across the country that were linked with AR-15-style weapons. If the goal is to avoid even the slightest connection to those horrific events, changing jersey numbers is an easy way to eliminate any chance of it coming back up.
Richardson almost went back to the No. 2 he wore in high school, according to the Indy Star. He chose the number because of Auburn and Carolina great Cam Newton, but Richardson isn’t looking to follow in the footsteps of anyone now that he’s in the league.
The former Florida signal-caller is off to carve his own path and write a new legacy for the No. 5 in Indianapolis. With all eyes on him as the No. 4 overall pick, he’ll get every opportunity to shine early.
