Where UNC football’s QB room ranks on Pro Football Focus

Here is where the UNC football program’s quarterback room ranks in all of college football.

Going into this upcoming 2023 college football season, North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is not only one of the top players at his position but in the entire country.

After a big first year as the starter in Chapel Hill, Maye is the leader of UNC’s offense as they look to take a step forward. Last season, the Tar Heels got off to a 9-1 start before losing four-straight games including the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and Holiday Bowl. But going into this year, where does the quarterback position rank in all of college football?

Pro Football Focus ranked each quarterback room and the Tar Heels cracked the list at No. 10. And a big reason why is Maye:

Outside of Caleb Williams, Drake Maye is the best returning quarterback in college football. His 45 big-time throws were 10 more than the next-closest FBS quarterback while his 899 rushing yards were second among Power Five signal-callers. Overall, Maye was the most valuable player in the country last year according to PFF’s wins above average metric.

The options behind Maye are less than inspiring, but the Tar Heels earned a spot on this list for the sole reason of having No. 10 under center.

While we know what we are getting from Maye but the backup situation is a little murky. However, the future of the position is important for the success for the program and potentially we could get a look at some of the backups if UNC is up big in a game or makes it to a bowl game.
