Where the Tigers stand in the latest ESPN recruiting rankings

The Tigers are off to a good start when it comes to Brian Kelly’s bump class.

There’s a lot of time between now and the early signing period in December, which means that there’s still a great deal of work yet to be done by coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the Tigers’ staff on the 2023 recruiting class.

However, the class is starting to take shape in Baton Rouge. The team has six commits, including four ranked in the top 150 of the 247Sports composite. The class is headlined by Mac Markway, a top-100 tight end from Missouri who was originally committed to Florida.

It’s far from a complete class: The team still lacks a commitment from a quarterback or a single player in the trenches on either side of the ball. But it’s a start — and a pretty good one, at that.

According to the latest ESPN recruiting rankings for the 2023 class, LSU ranks in the top 15, coming in at No. 12. Its group also ranks No. 12 in the 247Sports composite.

SEC rank: 4 of 14
Top offensive commit: TE Mac Markway (No. 122)
Top defensive commit: CB Daylen Austin (No. 138)

A key for Brian Kelly will be keeping the Tigers an in-state recruiting power. Many of the state’s top players remain uncommitted, but LSU landed top-10 prospect Omarion Miller, a receiver with a nice blend of size and quickness to win contested balls and make plays after the catch. The Tigers also secured a verbal from the top-rated RB in Louisiana in Trey Holly. Texas is also an important recruiting ground for the Tigers, and they pulled ESPN 300 CB Ryan Yaites, a defender with good length and tremendous quickness.

There are a number of talented uncommitted prospects that the Tigers are still after this cycle, and this class has the potential to rise even more in the coming months once the coaching staff can get some players on campus for official visits.

LSU expects better than a top-15 finish from Kelly’s bump class, but he has the makings of a very solid group for his first full recruiting cycle.
