What The Athletic Says…

“Big Game Bob” ruled the Big 12. He won more Big 12 championships (10) than he lost home games (nine). He averaged 10 wins per season, took the Sooners to four national championship games and won one. He has the most wins in Sooners history, 33 more than Barry Switzer. When Stoops took over, the Sooners hadn’t finished with a winning record or in the Top 25 the previous five seasons. Only twice in his 18 seasons did the Sooners finish unranked, and his worst record was his first, a 7-5 mark in 1999. The Sooners’ continued success, four years after his retirement, speaks to the foundation he built.

The best coach in Big 12 Conference history is without a doubt “Big Game” Bob Stoops. He finished his career with 10 Big 12 Championships, a BCS National Championship, another BCS Championship game appearance, as well as a College Football Playoff appearance. His final record sits at 190-48, 121-29 in the Big 12. After 18 seasons, no one has seen the success in the conference that Stoops did, passing Barry Switzer for all-time wins in school history. A big reason why he is now a Hall of Fame coach.
