LSU nearly took a loss that would have all but ended its College Football Playoff hopes three weeks into the season, but the second-largest road comeback in program history was enough for it to overcome a 17-0 deficit and win 36-33 against South Carolina in Columbia.
While it was a much-needed win for the Tigers, it also didn’t do much to ease the concerns the first two weeks raised about this team. As a result, coach Brian Kelly’s squad saw no movement in On3’s SEC power rankings from Thomas Goldkamp this week, remaining at No. 9 after the come-from-behind win over the Gamecocks.
It was an all-out struggle against South Carolina after falling behind 17-0 and there will be some major question marks even after the comeback win. The offensive line, in particular, stands out as a large one.
Still, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was excellent against a fearsome pass rush. He got up every time he got hit and kept trucking, eventually helping the Tigers outlast their opponent. Up one spot in the SEC Power Rankings as a result.
The Tigers have a good chance of getting to 4-1 after Saturday’s win. The next two weeks feature games they’ll be heavy favorites in against UCLA and South Alabama, both at home. After that, it’s a bye before the all-important Oct. 12 matchup against Ole Miss, which will likely rank in the top five.
