In his first year starting for LSU, [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] etched his name into the program’s record books.
The Lake Charles, LA native turned in a stellar season that puts him in a position to take over as the Tigers’ all-time leading passer as he needs 3,343 to surpass Tommy Hodson’s mark of 9,115. Nussmeier will have a chance to set the record in 2025 as he committed to don the purple and gold for a fifth season.
But where does Nussmeier’s 2024 performance stack up against other LSU quarterbacks?
After playing behind Max Johnson and Heisman winner Jayden Daniels, Nussmeier earned the starting role and put together a quality inaugural season as the offensive leader.
With 4,052 passing yards, Nussmeier ranks second in single-season passing yards as he passed Daniels’ mark of 3,812 yards set in 2023.
He trails Joe Burrow, who threw for 5,671 yards during the national championship season in 2019 and set the SEC record in the category.
Daniels and Burrow also occupy the seventh and eighth spots, respectively, in single-season passing yards at LSU. Daniels threw for 2,913 yards in 2022 and Burrow totaled 2,894 in 2018.
Nussmeier finished third in single-season passing touchdowns with 29. He connected with Kyren Lacy for nine and Aaron Anderson for five. Trey’Dez Green also hauled in four touchdown passes, including two in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl win over Baylor.
Burrow and Daniels rank first and second, respectively, in the category. Burrow set an NCAA record with 60 touchdowns in 2019. He found Ja’Marr Chase for 20 and Justin Jefferson for 18. Daniels threw for 40 scores last season, 17 of which went to Brian Thomas Jr. while 14 found the hands of Malik Nabers.
Will Nussmeier set the records in either category by the end of next season? While it would be hard to top Burrow’s mark in touchdowns, the passing yards record is within reach.
