Where does Hugh Freeze’s salary rank among fellow SEC head coaches?

A report from USA TODAY Sports shows that Freeze’s yearly salary is among the highest in college football.

The SEC is great at many things. One of those things is ensuring that its head football coaches are well-paid.

A report from USA TODAY Sports revealed the salaries of all college football head coaches from public institutions this week, and Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is among the highest paid. Freeze checks in at No. 25 with a salary of $6,728,100.

The report also shows maximum bonuses, bonuses paid, and buyout amounts. For Freeze, he is paid $6,725,000 from Auburn University and has earned $300,000 in bonus money during the 2023-24 academic year. Freeze has a maximum bonus of $3,300,000 and his buyout active to Dec. 1 is $20,312,500 should Auburn elect to part ways with Freeze, or if another program were to hire him as their head coach.

Although Freeze is among the highest-paid head coaches in college football, he is among the lowest-paid within his conference. Freeze’s salary is the 12th highest among SEC coaches. Only Sam Pittman (Arkansas), Shane Beamer (South Carolina), and Jeff Lebby (Mississippi State) are paid less than Freeze. Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea’s salary is unknown due to Vanderbilt being a private institution.
