Spencer Dinwiddie may have been the Brooklyn Nets leading scorer before the NBA went on hiatus due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, but the point guard liked to find open teammates just as much. The role of facilitator is the one he’s taken on throughout most of his career.
So whenever one of his big men rushed the rack — be it Jarrett Allen or DeAndre Jordan — Dinwiddie made sure to hit them with a lob.
As much as he’s had the chance to build up some chemistry with Allen, Dinwiddie fed the old Los Angeles Clippers’ “Lob City” center with alley-oops much more frequently.
In fact, according to Bryan Kalbrosky of USA Today SMG’s HoopsHype, Dinwiddie and Jordan connected on more lobs than any other tandem in the entire NBA in 2019-20, before the hiatus:
Spencer Dinwiddie assisted DeAndre Jordan on 46 alley-oop opportunities this season. This means they averaged 2.76 alley-oops per 36 minutes shared (599 minutes) on the floor.
Dinwiddie and Allen were ranked third in alley-oop connections before the hiatus with 40.
Houston’s James Harden and Clint Capela also connected on 46 alley-oop opportunities before the big man was dealt away at the 2020 NBA Trade Deadline.
Dinwiddie’s 86 alley-oop passes are the most of any player in 2019-20. LeBron James was second, finding Anthony Davis, Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee a combined 78 times.
Unfortunately for Nets fans, they’ll have to wait until 2020-21 to see the Dinwiddie connect with either Jordan or Allen. The point guard, as well as Jordan, is out for the NBA’s restart after testing positive for COVID-19.
