Where do Dolphins officially stand in 2021 NFL Draft order?

The Miami Dolphins’s season has come to an end and the team will now turn their focus towards continuing to build up one of the youngest rosters in football with another round of free agency and the NFL Draft. And although Miami has been willing to spend in free agency, even with this new regime, the new identity of the Dolphins will be determined through their assets in the NFL Draft.

Miami has been keeping a close eye on the NFL Draft order over the last few weeks — and all of that suspense has paid off for Miami. They’re sitting on a treasure trove for the second consecutive season.

How high are we talking for Miami’s picks? Here’s how Miami’s assets align if the 2020 NFL season ended today according to Tankathon:

  • Texans’ 1st-round pick: No. 3 overall
  • Dolphins’ 1st-round pick: No. 18 overall
  • Texans’ 2nd-round pick: No. 36 overall
  • Dolphins’ 2nd-round pick: No.  50 overall

Four picks in the top-50 overall selections as things currently stand. That’s about as well as you could have drawn it up for Miami from an NFL Draft perspective, especially when you consider the team claimed ten victories in 2020 and was able to evaluate and develop a great deal of their massive 2020 rookie class. This isn’t a team that has all the answers at this point — they’re not even close to that plane of existence just yet. But what they do have is premiere draft picks for the second consecutive year and plenty of optimism that the youth of the roster is only getting started.

Miami’s flexibility is their number one asset at this point in time. There’s no reason the team couldn’t pivot in any direction in the draft after what figures to be an active and aggressive free agency window. The key for Miami will be making the most of these opportunities — because as things currently stand, their double dip of premiere assets will come to a close after 2021.
