Despite being ranked eighth in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, the Oklahoma Sooners have a big opportunity in the next four weeks to make their case for a place in the final four. After Michigan State’s loss to unranked Purdue, that case got a bit easier.
Looking at the latest bowl projections, the Sooners might already be back in even though they were on a bye in week 10.
Mark Schlabach of ESPN has the Oklahoma Sooners headed to the Cotton Bowl (ESPN+) for one of the College Football Playoff semifinal games.
I’m going with undefeated Oklahoma at No. 2. The Sooners were off this past weekend, and if they can survive a three-game stretch against Baylor (road), Iowa State (home) and Oklahoma State (road), then win the Big 12 championship game, it’s going to be impossible to keep them out of the top four. I’ve got Ohio State at No. 3 and Oregon at No. 4. Cincinnati is my No. 5 team for now. – Schlabach
Oklahoma would get the Ohio State Buckeyes while the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs would face off with No. 4 Oregon in Schlabach’s projections. The Cincinnati Bearcats would be on the outside looking at this point despite their undefeated record.
The Oklahoma Sooners control their own destiny in the Big 12 title race and the College Football Playoff rankings. If they do what they’re expected, they should be in the top four at the end of the season. But it won’t be easy. Despite Baylor’s loss, they’ll pose a challenge to Oklahoma this week. As will Iowa State and Oklahoma State in the weeks leading up to what will hopefully be another trip to the Big 12 championship.
