When will Jimbo Fisher announce the Aggies starting QB for 2023? Just look at his track record

As Texas A&M’s 2023 season opener is just three weeks away, Fisher is likely very close to announcing who will start at quarterback; Conner Weigman, or Max Johnson?

It’s never a complete Texas A&M football offseason without a little controversy regarding the quarterback position, specifically who will start for the Aggies in 2023, as the Sept. 2 season opener vs. New Mexico is just three weeks away.

While the signal caller duo of sophomore Conner Weigman and senior southpaw Max Johnson both exhibited signs of growth during fall camp this month, newly minted offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s perceived favorability towards Weigman may be a bit overblown. However, Johnson’s arm strength-based skill set differs due to his large stature and experience in the SEC; Petrino trusts that whoever ultimately wins the job will be able to lead one of the more talented offensive units in the country.

“Both of them have been doing a good job of leading, and that’s important to both of them. They’re a little bit different. Right now, we’re working on finding out more and more about them each day.”

Following TexAgs columnist Olin Buchanan’s lead on the subject, Fisher’s decision-making methodology is equivalent to an old school balancing scale, weighing the many positives and few negatives both quarterbacks present, though going off of his choice last season, Haynes King was named the starter on Aug. 27. I’d wager a similar timeframe at the end of this month.

As I stated earlier this month, time will eventually tell who takes that final step toward opening the season atop the depth chart. However, based on fall camp’s performances, this Aggies offense has enough talent to make any quarterback’s job a little easier. At the same time, both Weigman and Johnson have developed chemistry with the starting receiving core. However, let me leave you with a quote from Olin Buchanan that perfectly sums up the debate moving forward:

“Johnson can do what the Aggies need. Weigman just seems like he can do more.”
