When to pick Philip Rivers in your fantasy draft

Assessing Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers’ 2020 ADP and fantasy football draft value. Is he a sleeper or bust? Undervalued or overvalued?

Fantasy football season is in the air and the unique offseason is causing more questions than answers as we enter our fantasy football drafts. Today we focus on Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers and his fantasy football potential this year.

Philip Rivers’ fantasy football ADP

Rivers is currently ranked No. 225, with an average draft position of 135.04 on MyFantasyLeague.com. He ranks 30th among quarterbacks.

Reasons to draft Philip Rivers

  • While not a top-tier fantasy QB, he had been one of the most consistent performers, averaging between 16-18 fantasy points per game from 2013-2018.
  • You can count on him to pile up passing yards. He was fourth with more than 4,600 yards in 2019 and has had at least 4,200 in each of the last seven seasons and 10 of the last 11.
  • You don’t have to worry about his durability. He has not missed a game since taking over the starting job with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2006.
  • Now on the Colts, he returns to an offensive system in which he thrived.

Reasons not to draft Philip Rivers

  • His fantasy production dropped to 14.7 points per game last season, a drop of more than three points per game over 2018.
  • He became more prone to turnovers last season, throwing 20 interceptions after 22 the previous two seasons combined. He averaged 2.2 interceptable passes per game.
  • He does not give you any extra value in running the ball.

Where should I draft Philip Rivers?

Rivers has been extremely productive for years. However, he should not be a priority in anyone’s league. The one thing he is valuable for is being a productive backup if you end up losing your quarterback to injury. He shouldn’t be anyone’s QB1 at this point. Pick him up late to use on the bye week or to fill in for a starter who misses a game or two with an injury.

He will not be the reason you win but he can keep you from losing in a pinch.
