On The Riley Files, Oklahoma insider Kegan Reneau offered a history lesson on Lincoln Riley’s first big recruiting class in Norman.
“Let’s focus on him as an offensive coordinator,” Reneau said. “During that time, they landed that 2017 recruiting class, which was that first big recruiting class for them. That would be the recruiting class prior to Bob Stoops’ retirement that June. In February of 2017 (the recruiting class is nailed down), then Bob Stoops retires in June, that’s really the first one that Lincoln had his hands all over. It seemed like the things that Lincoln brought to the table in terms of philosophy, being young and energetic, what is connecting with players these days, Oklahoma was hitting on all the right cylinders. They called it Sooner Squad ’17. That group went on to help Oklahoma do a bunch of really, really good things. That was the first sign of how Lincoln Riley was going to tactically recruit specifically around a quarterback, Chris Robison, who ended up playing for Lane Kiffin at Florida Atlantic.”
It will be fascinating to see how Riley’s USC recruiting classes are measured against 2017 Oklahoma.
