For the last few years, one matchup has dominated the SEC women’s basketball headlines. [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] and LSU vs. Dawn Staley and South Carolina.
Last year, the two met for the SEC title, and chaos ensued.
Tensions boiled over, leading to something in between a fight and a brawl. South Carolina’s Kamilla Cardoso leveled LSU guard Flau’jae Johnson.
After the fight, South Carolina went on to win 79-72. LSU made a run in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
South Carolina has won 16 straight vs. LSU. The Tigers have come close but are yet to be successful in ending the Gamecocks run of dominance.
LSU will try again in less than a month.
LSU and South Carolina will meet on Jan. 23 in Colombia, SC. It will be LSU’s sixth conference game of the season and the second of back-to-back road games after LSU travels to Florida earlier in the week.
The SEC doesn’t always offer the same strength as schedule that teams in other conferences see. That means winning or losing the South Carolina game can be the difference between LSU getting a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament or falling to the No. 3 or No. 4 line.
