There is a rumor floating around as first reported by NFL Network reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala that Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler is planning to retire this offseason.
This got us thinking about what this will mean for the future of the Steelers defense and who Pittsburgh will hire. Then I remember the Steelers don’t hire guys from the outside. And defensive assistant Teryl Austin is right there waiting for the promotion.
In no way is this intended to be disparaging about Austin. Austin joined the team in 2019 after multiple stints as defensive coordinator throughout the league. Players speak very highly of Austin and his football acumen.
But if you are looking for new and different, this isn’t your guy. Head coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t bring in outside candidates for coordinator spots for the most part which helps maintain the status quo. For better or worse, this is the way.
The Steelers had the No. 24 ranked defensive in the league in 2021 in terms of yards allowed and No. 20 for points allowed. The run defense was dead last and negated any benefit gained by leading the league in sacks.
Let us know in the comments if Butler does retire, are you ok with Austin being promoted or do you want an outside candidate in there?
