What would the San Antonio Spurs do if the 2024 NBA trade deadline were today? According to Bleacher Report NBA analyst Greg Swartz, it ought to be starting a search for a potential franchise point guard to pair with rookie forward sensation Victor Wembanyama.
Swartz rightly notes that the Spurs’ usual style of play leans heavily on ball movement. And so long as there is no true floor general on the roster, it will be hard to know what Wemby and other developing players can really do in a proper offense. “While no team has registered a higher team assist percentage than the Spurs (69.8%), they rank just 22nd overall in turnover rate (14.3%),” he writes.

Per Swartz, it “could mean a reunion with Dejounte Murray,” the former Spurs star. It could also mean “a potential home for D’Angelo Russell in a three-team deal where Murray goes to the Los Angeles Lakers.”
It could even be “a veteran like Malcolm Brogdon to make life easier for Wembanyama and others.”
We would go with Brogdon given he is on a bargain contract of $22.5 million per season for this and next season. It’d be enough time to get that look at a proper offense, and a chance to extend or move him again as the future team needs may dictate.
