WWE says SummerSlam 2023 has multiple main events, which is good marketing, even if it’s opened up the floodgates for some justified teasing. But to quote the “Highlander” movies from back in the day, there can be only one.
Only one real main event that is, the match that actually closes the show. And according to Fightful Select (subscription required), that will be the Tribal Combat showdown between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso for both the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship and position of Tribal Chief.
Fightful notes the match order is tentative and subject to change, but Roman vs. Jey would be the most logical of the four championship matches, as well as any of the eight matches on the card, to close things out. It has the most emotional resonance of all thanks to the tremendous work WWE has done with the Bloodline saga, and has the highest stakes.
That’ll be even more true if Uso wins. Unlike at WrestleMania, when many expected Reigns to lose to Cody, the consensus public opinion is that Reigns should retain both his championship belt and his role as Tribal Chief. If WWE decides to pull a surprise in Detroit, however, it’s hard to argue for any other bout deserving the actual main event slot.
We’ll see if all goes according to plan, but as Reigns might say, if he’s on the show, he’s closing the show, and that should be the case tonight.
