What we learned from Stephen F. Austin vs UTEP

UTEP got their season rolling against SFA on Saturday. Here are three things we learned about the Miners before their matchup with Texas:

Texas’ offensive line should dominate upfront

Pass protection was an issue for Texas last season, giving up 36 sacks, the second-most in the Big 12. That was even with Samuel Cosmi and Derek Kerstetter, the best tackle combination in the conference last season.

With four starting offensive lineman returning from last season, the Longhorns should be in better shape upfront. Especially against UTEP, who did not get into the backfield a ton against Stephen F. Austin.

Tyrice Knight recorded the only sack on Saturday for the Miners. Dennis Barnes led the way with 1.5 tackles for loss and the team as a whole combining for 5.0 TFLs.

From a run game perspective, UTEP was better, only giving up 93 total yards and an average of 4.2 yards per carry. However, Texas’ line will be a more physical unit than Stephen F. Austin ever was.

Expect the interior offensive line of Junior Angilau (LG), Kerstetter (C), and Isaiah Hookfin (RG) to have big days. And as usual, Cosmi at left tackle will continue to show why he is one of the best in the country.

Sam Ehlinger should have plenty of time to make his throws if needed to on Saturday. The key for the Texas offense will be in the run game. If successful, Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson, and Bijan Robinson are all in for big days.
